Statement format
American Express statements download as text PDFs that parse directly; a scan or photo works too via on-device OCR.
Good to know
American Express also offers a native CSV and Excel export of recent activity and keeps up to two years of transactions online, so for recent months you may not need to parse a PDF at all.
Getting your American Express credit card statement
Sign in at americanexpress.com, open Statements & Activity, choose the statement period, and download it as PDF. It downloads as a text PDF that LedgerClip reads directly, and a scan or photo works too. See American Express's official statement help.
What you get
Each transaction becomes one row with the posting date, the description exactly as American Express printed it, the amount with the right sign, and the running balance. The opening and closing balances are checked against the total so an incomplete extraction is caught before import. On a credit card, purchases come out as negative amounts (money spent) and payments or credits as positive, and the QBO export is written as a credit-card account so QuickBooks files it correctly.
Other formats
Also available for American Express: CSV, Excel.
Questions
- Does the American Express statement have to be a downloaded PDF, or can I use a scan or photo?
- Both work. A statement downloaded from American Express is read from its text and is the most reliable. A scan or a phone photo is read on your device with OCR and checked so the totals reconcile.
- Is my American Express statement uploaded anywhere?
- No. The file is opened by code running in your browser and never transmitted. The byte counter on the page shows zero throughout.
- What does the QuickBooks (QBO) file contain?
- An OFX/QBO credit-card file with a stable ID per transaction, which QuickBooks imports as a credit-card account.
- How many statements are free?
- Three a month, with every export format. Pro removes the limit.
