Getting the PDF from American Express

Open Statements & Activity, pick the billing period, and choose Download as PDF. A downloaded PDF parses directly; a scan or photo also works, read on your device with OCR.

What you get

Each transaction becomes one row with the posting date, the description exactly as American Express printed it, the amount with the right sign, and the running balance. The opening and closing balances are checked against the total so an incomplete extraction is caught before import.

Can I use a American Express scan or photo, or does it have to be the downloaded PDF?
Both work. A American Express statement downloaded from online banking is read from its text and is the most reliable. A scan or a phone photo is read on your device with OCR and checked so the totals reconcile.
Is my American Express statement uploaded?
No. The file is opened by code running in your browser and never transmitted. The byte counter on the page shows zero throughout.
What does the CSV file contain?
Date, description, signed amount (deposits positive, withdrawals negative) and the running balance when the statement prints one.
How many statements are free?
