Getting the PDF from Capital One

Select the account, click View Statements, choose the month and download the PDF. A downloaded PDF parses directly; a scan or photo also works, read on your device with OCR.

What you get

Each transaction becomes one row with the posting date, the description exactly as Capital One printed it, the amount with the right sign, and the running balance. The opening and closing balances are checked against the total so an incomplete extraction is caught before import.

Questions

Can I use a Capital One scan or photo, or does it have to be the downloaded PDF?
Both work. A Capital One statement downloaded from online banking is read from its text and is the most reliable. A scan or a phone photo is read on your device with OCR and checked so the totals reconcile.
Is my Capital One statement uploaded?
No. The file is opened by code running in your browser and never transmitted. The byte counter on the page shows zero throughout.
What does the QuickBooks (QBO) file contain?
An OFX 1.02 Web Connect file with a registered bank ID, a stable ID per transaction, and the closing balance, which is what QuickBooks expects.
How many statements are free?
Three a month, with every export format. Pro removes the limit.
